CBD stands for cannabinol and it is one out of around one hundred cannabinoids that exist within the cannabis plant. Researchers have identified as CBD as one of the cannabinoids with significant health and wellness benefits. In addition, it doesn’t produce any intoxicating effects like THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

With what seems to be a wonder drug, CBD has caught the world’s attention. Furthermore, with reports of CBD helping with things like general pain, stress, anxiety, depression, and much more, it’s not hard to see why it’s received so much attention.

CBD & Athletes

Due to reports of CBD helping with general pain and without any known harmful side effects, it’s become a popular choice for athletes. Top athletes like Ricky Williams, Mike Tyson, and Lamar Odom, just to name a few are some the athletes who on board with CBD.

Some of these athletes believe so strongly in CBD that they’ve created their own companies or have become investors for other cannabis ventures.

Ricky Williams is a former NFL player for the Miami Dolphins and is a large cannabis advocate. He believes players should have access to medical cannabis for pain. Furthermore, he has launched his own CBD company called, Real Wellness.

Former heavyweight boxing champion, Mike Tyson, is another large CBD supporter. He announced earlier this year that he would be building a cannabis-themed ranch offering multiple luxury amenities.

Lamar Odom, the former LA Lakers basketball star, is another activist for CBD. Odom, who was once addicted to drugs and went through many medical complications due to his addiction, found that CBD and other cannabis products really helped him. He created his own vape pen brand after a life-threatening drug overdose induced a coma.

“While going through rehab, I discovered certain strains that support wellness,” Odom said in an interview with The Blast in April 2018. “Friends, associates, and ex-teammates asked me what solutions I was using on my road back to recovery, and that’s when Rich Soil Organics was born.”

Cannabis companies and CBD

On a similar note, large cannabis companies are seeking out athletes to be sponsors for their brands. Aurora Cannabis, a top cannabis company, recently signed a multi-million-dollar deal with the UFC. Furthermore, Canopy growth, another top cannabis company, has partnered up with the NHL Alumni Association to perform cannabis research trial.

It makes sense that the sports world would be such a great target for cannabis companies due to the many health and wellness properties it contains. It will be interesting to see how the combination of sports and cannabis plays out during the long-run. Many sports organizations will have to take cannabis more seriously as legalization continues.
