It seems that you can’t hear or listen to the news or media without some sort of mention about CBD. Recently, CBD which stands for cannabinol and has become talked about for many reasons. There has been a lot of confusion surrounding CBD because it’s all so new. Some of the main things that are mentioned in regard to CBD are the legalities. With all the advancements in the cannabis industry, it can be hard to keep up.
A topic that received much engagement is TSA’s stance on CBD products being allowed to pass through customs. Due to the legalities surrounding CBD being somewhat confusing and not so black and white, people have begun traveling with it.
This had left TSA members scratching their heads on what to do about the matter. On May 27th, TSA decided to take action and quietly changed their policy regarding cannabis. Now, travelers carrying forms of CBD oil are allowed to bring the substance on board.

Before the TSA removed their restrictions on medical cannabis, all forms of marijuana were prohibited in both checked and carry-on bags. Their new policy update was created to reflect the new regulations regarding FDA-approved hemp-derived CBD oil products.
The CBD products that are being allowed are the ones that are produced within the regulations defined by the law. In the recent Farm Bill that was passed in 2018, hemp and hemp derivatives became legalized.
The reason only hemp and hemp derivatives are legal is that they contain barely any THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Hemp-based products contain 0.3 percent THC or less. THC is the property in marijuana that gets you “high.”
Unfortunately, the TSA still bans other forms of cannabis such as specific cannabis-infused products and CBD oils containing a substantial amount of THC. These types of products are still illegal under federal law. Furthermore, the TSA is still obligated to report any violations.
One thing that is not clear is how the TSA will check whether a product actually contains THC or not. A TSA spokesperson stated, that if a certain product was under question, it would be referred to law enforcement for further action. The TSA won’t actually perform the testing.

The TSA updating the ban on cannabis is a huge step forward. It may be a slow process, but legalization is on the right track forward. Hopefully one day soon, the issues of traveling with cannabis products will become a distant memory.
