Early settlement
Historically, various Siouan Native American tribes, such as the Eno, Shakori, Waccamaw, Keyauwee, and Cape Fear, inhabited the area of modern-day Fayetteville. For more than 12,000 years, they were influenced by successive cultures of other indigenous peoples in the region.
In the second decade of the 18th century, following the violent upheavals of the Yamasee War and Tuscarora Wars, the colonial government of North Carolina encouraged colonial settlement along the upper Cape Fear River, the only navigable waterway entirely within the colony. Scots from Campbeltown, Argyll and Bute, Scotland founded two settlements in the interior, Cross Creek and Campbellton.
Wilmington merchants desired a town on the Cape Fear River to facilitate trade with the frontier. They feared that the Pee Dee River would be used to transport goods to Charleston, South Carolina. The merchants purchased land in Cross Creek from Newberry. Campbellton gained a reputation as a place where poor whites and free blacks resided and committed crimes.
Cross Creek and Campbellton merged in 1783, and the new town was named Fayetteville in honor of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, a French military hero who aided the American forces significantly during the war. Fayetteville was the first city in the United States to be named in his honor. On March 4 and 5, 1825, during his grand tour of the United States, Lafayette visited the city.
