About Jacksonville, Florida and our Delta 8 Shop

The most populous city in Florida, Jacksonville is also the largest city in terms of land area in the contiguous United States as of the year 2020. Jacksonville can be found on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the state of Florida. It is the county seat of Duval County, and in 1968, the city government of Jacksonville consolidated with the county government. The vast majority of Jacksonville’s metropolitan population now resides within the city limits, thanks to consolidation, which is what gave Jacksonville its enormous size. As of the year 2020, the population of Jacksonville was estimated to be 949,611, making it the most populous city in the Southeast and the most populous city in the South outside of the state of Texas. Jacksonville is the 12th most populous city in the United States overall. The metropolitan area surrounding Jacksonville, Florida is the fourth most populous in the state of Florida, with a total population of 1,733,937 people.

The city of Jacksonville is located in the First Coast region of northeast Florida, straddling the St. Johns River. It is approximately 11 miles (18 kilometers) south of the Georgia state line (25 miles or 40 kilometers to the urban core) and 350 miles (560 kilometers) north of Miami. The communities known as the Jacksonville Beaches can be found along the Atlantic coast nearby. The Timucua people were the first known inhabitants of this region. In 1564, the French colony of Fort Caroline was established here, making it one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. The Seminole people referred to the point in the river where cattle crossed as Wacca Pilatka, while the British referred to it as the Cow Ford. This settlement grew during the time that the British ruled the area. It was named after Andrew Jackson, who served as the first military governor of the Florida Territory and as the seventh President of the United States. The town was laid out in 1822, one year after the United States acquired Florida from Spain.

Since the late 19th century, Jacksonville has undergone a series of harbor improvements that have elevated the city to the status of a major military and civilian deep-water port. Its riverine location makes it convenient for the United States Marine Corps Blount Island Command, the Naval Air Station Jacksonville, the Naval Station Mayport, and the Port of Jacksonville, which is Florida’s third largest seaport. The military presence in and around Jacksonville, which includes the city’s bases as well as the nearby Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, is the third largest in the United States. Services such as banking, insurance, healthcare, and logistics are major contributors to the community’s economy. Tourism is an important industry in the Jacksonville area, as it is throughout much of the state of Florida, particularly tourism related to golf. “Jacksonvillians” and “Jaxsons” (also spelled “Jaxons”) are names that are used to refer to people who are from Jacksonville.

Why Visit Jacksonville? Top 3 Attractions in Jacksonville, Florida

Jacksonville, Florida ought to be at the very top of your list of potential vacation destinations in the event that you are looking for a fantastic place to go. This lively city is home to a bevy of incredible attractions and activities to partake in. Jacksonville is home to a wide variety of attractions, ranging from museums of international renown to breathtaking parks. In this article, we will take a more in-depth look at three of Jacksonville’s most popular tourist destinations:

Jacksonville, Florida is home to a number of museums, one of which is the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. When Ninah Cummer passed away in 1961, she left her gardens and personal art collection to the newly established museum. This led to the establishment of the museum. The Cummer Museum was later expanded to include the land that was owned by Ninah’s brother-in-law; however, it continues to showcase the original garden designs that Ninah created as well as a portion of her home that is still furnished with antiques. There are an average of 130,000 people who visit the museum and gardens each year.

There are currently over 5,000 pieces of artwork in the museum’s permanent collection, with the earliest piece dating back to 2100 BCE and the most recent piece being created in the 21st century. In addition to significant holdings of Meissen porcelain, the museum’s collection is particularly strong in European and American paintings. Additionally, the collection contains a good deal of Meissen porcelain. Art Connections, the museum’s education center, which has won multiple accolades, is home to a number of interactive educational installations, and provides educational opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as students with special education needs.

On the grounds of the museum, there are three different flower gardens, the earliest of which dates back to 1903. Over the course of more than a century, the original layout of these gardens has been carefully preserved. The Olmsted Brothers, Thomas Meehan & Sons, and Ellen Biddle Shipman were among the landscape architects who were responsible for their design. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes the Cummer Gardens as a location of historical significance.

At the mouth of the Trout River, close to where it empties into the St. Johns River, is where you’ll find the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. This attraction can be found in Jacksonville, Florida. The zoo is approximately 122 acres (49 ha) in size and is home to over 2,000 different species of animals in addition to 1,000 different types of plant life. With more than one million guests passing through its gates each year, the Springfield Zoo has evolved from its humble beginnings in the city to become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region.

Both the Range of the Jaguar, which was awarded the AZA Exhibit of the Year award in 2005 and the Land of the Tiger, which was opened in 2014 and features an innovative walk-through trail system for five tigers, are considered to be the most popular attractions at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. The other exhibits at the zoo include the Plains of East Africa, which features animals native to Africa’s savannas; the Australian Outback; the African Forest, which showcases two of the four genera of great apes as well as several species of lemurs; and Wild Florida, which showcases animals that are indigenous to the state of Florida.

The zoo is committed to the welfare of animals and takes part in more than fifty national and international conservation initiatives as well as more than ninety-five Species Survival Plans. In 2004, the zoo came to an agreement with the government of Guyana to aid in the preservation of natural resources in that nation, specifically within the Iwokrama Forest. Additionally, the zoo has been the location of a sizable breeding colony of wild wood storks ever since the year 1999. In spite of the fact that it is not in danger of extinction, this bird is exceedingly difficult to locate on the continent of North America. It has, in this particular instance, made its home in a tree that looks out over the Plains of Africa.

The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is a charitable organization with tax-exempt status that was established in Jacksonville, Florida, and it serves the counties of Duval, Saint Johns, Clay, Nassau, and Baker. We are also very proud of the fact that our location is a top destination for many people from other countries. They are incredibly grateful and humbled to hold the position of Trip Advisor’s number one attraction in Jacksonville.

The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary’s goals are to educate people about the plight of endangered big cats in both their natural environments and in captivity, as well as to provide a secure, loving, and permanent home for endangered big cats. The rescuing of exotic animals from dangerous situations is our primary mission. When an animal is brought to Catty Shack Ranch, they are immediately provided with a warm and caring home for the rest of their lives. We do not breed any of our residents, nor do we trade, sell, or buy any of them. Tigers, lions, pumas, leopards, lynxes, foxes, and coatimundis are some of the animals that currently call these enclosures home. The latter two species are considered “honorary cats.”

History:

Curt LoGiudice, who is now serving as our Executive Director and Curator, was the one who initiated all of this roughly three decades ago. After beginning his career by instructing police dogs, Curt transitioned into working with exotic animals in the year 1982. In 1984, he became licensed by the state, and in 1992, he became licensed by the federal government. Curt was asked by The Florida Panther Project in 1994 to act as the organization’s representative in Jacksonville for the purpose of giving educational talks about endangered panthers. His rescue operation had just started.

Curt is constantly expanding his knowledge of exotic animals by gaining insight from Catty Shack Ranch’s resident veterinarians, attending conferences held by the exotic animal industry, and participating in meetings held by the Florida Fish and Game Commission. When it comes to accepting animals, Curt also works with the USDA and officials from the state. Most importantly, he has garnered the respect of the animals entrusted to his care, and anyone who observes this dynamic can clearly see that it is a two-way street!
